Department Summary & Job Purpose:

The Facilities Management Planning & Construction group supports the administration, faculty, staff and students in the quality planning and development of facilities projects that support our mission. Our talented staff work in various crafts including, cleaning (night and day custodial, housekeeping), building trades (painting, carpentry, locksmith, electrical, HVAC, plumbing), as well as, on the grounds, and in the stockroom. Our office handles over 18,000 telephone calls per year and we respond to over 12,000 service requests. We are responsible for maintaining 300 acres and more than 2,000,000 square feet of property in 100+ buildings.

 

Core Job Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Persons in this position assemble, install, test, and maintain electrical or electronic wiring, equipment, appliances, apparatus, and fixtures, using hand tools and power tools. They diagnose malfunctioning systems, apparatus, and components, using test equipment and hand tools to locate the cause of a breakdown and correct the problem. They inspect and test electrical systems, equipment, and components to identify hazards, defects, and the need for adjustment or repair, and to ensure compliance with codes. They will be expected to take emergency after hour calls. This position requires the use of a variety of tools and equipment such as power construction equipment, measuring devices, power tools, and testing equipment.
  • The campus systems that electricians work on include:
    • Building services;
    • Wiring equipment;
    • Emergency and campus street lighting;
    • Experience with Simplex fire alarm systems is desirable;
    • Controls;
    • Telecommunications and computer wiring; and,
    • Primary (4160, 13800) and secondary distribution systems.

Qualifications: 

Qualified applicants for this position will have a valid MA journeyman electrical license, a valid MA driver’s license, and a minimum of five year’s licensed work experience with the maintenance, construction, and installation of electrical systems. They must be able to:

•Distinguish between the full range of colors in the color spectrum to work with electrical wires;
•Use graphic instructions such as blueprints, schematic drawings, layouts, or other visual aids;
•Make mathematical calculations;
•Exercise independent thought and action within the scoop of specific assignments;
•Express ideas on technical problems clearly;

 

License/Certifications: A valid MA journeyman electrical license, a valid MA driver’s license.

 

Physical Demands: 

Electricians should be able to:
•Handle 1 to 100 pounds of load resistance on an occasional basis.
•Work with arms raised above shoulder level to work in ceilings areas or on light fixtures.
•Work at heights greater than 10 feet.
•Travel across rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces.

Working Conditions: This position requires standing for most of the time. The working environment varies, depending on the type of job. Some projects may require work in dusty, dirty, hot, or wet conditions, or in confined areas, ditches, or other uncomfortable places. The job of an electrician might include bending wires, pipes and other materials, lifting heavy objects, standing on a height, kneeling for some hours and even stooping in many cases. In addition, persons in this position are required to work from ladders, scaffolds, high lifts, and roofs, indoors and out to install, maintain or repair electrical wiring, equipment, and fixtures.
