Department Summary & Job Purpose:

Mount Holyoke College’s Library, Information, and Technology Services (LITS) Division empowers a diverse and inclusive learning community equipping every person to purposefully engage the world. Research and Instructional Support (RIS) is a co-located group of librarians and instructional technologists within LITS. RIS provides research support, information literacy programming, language learning support, library collections, and instructional technology support which advance excellence in teaching and learning. Within RIS, the Educational Technology team facilitates the critical use of technologies in teaching and learning in a primarily residential setting. The team develops and supports a suite of foundational technology offerings, including the learning management system, videoconferencing, and content creation platforms, while also collaborating with faculty to introduce, foster, support and expand innovative uses of technologies in classrooms across campus. The team plays a key role in the campus’s Arts and Technology Initiative; works closely with the campus Makerspace community; is building capacity in data services for faculty and students; and partners with other LITS units on the effective deployment of technology in classrooms and labs.

Reporting to the Manager of Educational Technology, the Instructional Technologist collaborates with Mount Holyoke faculty and students across the college at the intersection of teaching, learning, and technology. As a critical member of the Educational Technology team within Research and Instructional Support (RIS), this person partners with colleagues to manage the implementation of new and existing campus technologies, connects with and assists faculty and student users of these technology tools, and builds a pedagogical and technological repertoire that is tailored to the needs of the Mount Holyoke community. The Instructional Technologist also collaborates with colleagues across LITS, to ensure the integration and complementarity of support for LITS programs and services.

The Instructional Technologist will be further tasked with providing advanced support for one or more of the College’s core technologies, including the learning management system (currently Moodle), content publishing platform (currently WordPress), video storage and delivery platform (currently Kaltura), and/or interactive content creation and authoring tools (currently H5P).


Core Job Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Collaborates with faculty and students to support the design, implementation and assessment of meaningfully integrated technology skills and tools into teaching and learning activities at the College. 
  • Effectively develops, delivers, and assesses seminars, workshops, and other learning opportunities, both those integrated into regular courses and conducted independently for faculty and students. 
  • Serves as a key source of support for advanced faculty and staff users of core learning technologies, such as learning management systems, content publishing platforms, video management technologies, or interactive content creation and authoring tools.  
  • Keeps abreast of new trends, tools, opportunities, and campus needs in the areas of teaching, learning, and instructional technologies. Actively contributes to team effort to identify, plan, and implement the best solutions for Mount Holyoke.
  • Maintains a high level of quality customer service standards responding to questions and problems. Actively works to help the Educational Technology team, RIS, LITS, and the College to create an accessible and welcoming environment in which a diverse population of students, faculty, and staff can thrive. 

Qualifications: 1. Bachelor’s degree.
2. Experience providing technical support, particularly to users of a learning management, data management, or content management system.
3. Experience teaching courses, class sessions, or workshops.
4. Competence working with multiple operating systems.
5. Advanced knowledge of two or more technologies in common use at Mount Holyoke.
6. A working knowledge of best practices and emerging trends in the field of instructional technology.
7. A demonstrable willingness to experiment with emerging technologies in the course of one’s work.

Preferred Qualifications: 1. Advanced degree or training in instructional technology, instructional design, education, library science, computer science, geoscience, or related field.
2. At least 2 years of post-graduate experience providing instructional technology support in an educational setting.
3. Experience developing curriculum, training materials, or technical documentation.
4. Experience managing or coordinating instructional technology projects, including setting project scope, goals and milestones, creating and testing deliverables, and assessing outcomes.
5. Skills, knowledge, or experience with spatial representation technologies, such as geographic information systems (GIS), computer-aided design software (CAD), and/or 3D modeling and scanning tools.
6. Familiarity with at least one programming or markup language (such as, but not limited to, HTML, XML, CSS, JavaScript, Python, and/or R).

Sufficient clarity of speech required includes those which permit the employee to discern verbal
instructions and communicate effectively in person and by telephone.
