Department Summary & Job Purpose:

The Area Coordinator is a 12-month live-in position. The Area Coordinator is responsible for the overall functioning of a student residence area of campus consisting of 6 to 8 residence halls, including direct supervision of Senior Community Advisors and Community Advisors. Area Coordinators work with the Associate Dean of Students & Director of Residential Life and Associate Director of Residential Life to develop an environment where individual responsibility and respect for differences are fostered and valued. In addition, the Area Coordinators are responsible for planning and promoting programmatic initiatives that will support community development. Special preference will be given to those with experience working in living learning communities. This is an ideal position for a new professional. Bachelor’s Degree is required, Master’s Degree is preferred.

Core Job Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Train, supervise, support, and evaluate 4 to 6 Senior Community Advisors and 25 to 35 Community Advisors through one-on-ones, group meetings, and other office communications.
  • Advise and support Senior Community Advisors in the mentoring of the Community Advisor staff in their respective area.
  • Oversee the budget for each building under your supervision, as well as an area budget for programming initiatives equivalent to one dollar per person in your area Participate in the Professional Staff on Call rotation and provide crisis intervention in emergency situations including contact with Campus Police, Health and Counseling Services, and direction to paraprofessional staff. ACs should expect to be on call approximately one week per month. As essential personnel, report to campus to assist during crisis or other situations as requested by the Associate Dean of Students/Director of Residential Life Set weekly office hours and be available during this time.
  • Check and return voicemail, email, and other correspondences in a timely fashion.
  • Collaborate with and make referrals to other departments as appropriate (Campus Police, Counseling Services, AccessAbility Services, Health Services, Student Involvement, Religious and Spiritual Life, etc.).
  • Enforce campus residential, social, community, and alcohol policies as mandated by Mount Holyoke College and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
  • Serve as a judicial/conduct officer, handling College response to student violations of college policy. Plan, develop and implement formal and informal educational and social programs for student staff, area- and campus-wide to promote visibility and community development.
  • Manage requests from individual students as well as 110 student organizations for use of residence hall common space through the EMS event reservation system. Assist the Associate Director of Residential Life with housing processes (i.e. room assignments, room changes, roommate mediation, and housing lottery).
  • Participate on various committees on campus and perform other duties as requested by the Associate Dean of Student & Director of Residential Life and the Vice President of Student Life/ Dean of Students.
  • Front Desk/ Office Management Hiring of student assistants Training of student assistants Supervision of Assistants Timesheets Serve as a resource for students, parents, and other departments.
  • Serve as the primary Residential Life liaison to the sophomore class and participate in events specific to that population
  • Oversee staff appreciation events such as birthday cards, appreciation week, and end of semester celebrations, as well as other moments to increase morale as desired
  • Schedule, coordinate, and oversee weekly staff in-service training
  • Send out weekly email with the student staff duty schedule as well as common room reservations
  • Plan and implement programs for November, January, and March breaks
  • Serve as the Residential Life liaison to No Study Zone, coordinating a trail mix bar Collateral Assignment-
  • Be Well Responsibilities: Assist in the development and/or implementation of the Be Well Strategic Plan Serve on any Be Well advisory committees or groups
  • Serve on the Be Well, Eat Well and Alcohol Drug Awareness Committees Assist with the development, coordination, and evaluation of activities for a Be Well Break Week each semester
  • Oversee the Alcohol and Other Drugs and Sexual Assault Prevention online training including: In collaboration with the Be Well Director and Associate Dean of Students/Director of Residential Life, set a rollout schedule including dates for follow up and accountability
  • Collaborate with the Title IX Coordinator and ADAC as needed to set customizations for each module
  • Develop communications to students about the modules
  • Ensure the training is sent to all students required to complete it and follow up with students who are not in compliance
  • Answer student questions regarding access to the module
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree is required, Masters’ Preferred
  • Must have an understanding of values and expectations of a women's college that is a gender diverse, research liberal arts college.
  • Demonstrate intercultural, diversity and inclusion competencies and a commitment to working with diverse populations.
  • Working knowledge of principles, practices, and theories of student learning and development; understanding of the cultural, social, and educational needs of students in residential communities.
  • Demonstrated ability to creatively and efficiently solve problems, using sound judgment, assuming ownership of a problem, and resolving challenges in a collaborative manner.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally.
  • Demonstrated commitment to supporting the department's goal in creating and engaging in inclusive, compassionate, and authentic communities.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in higher education/student affairs or equivalent is preferred.
  • Agility and familiarity with Google suite, Canva, database systems such as Residence, Starfish, Colleague, and computer literacy preferred.
  • Experience working with living-learning communities and international students.

License/Certifications:

  • Valid Drivers License allows the employee to be certified to drive one of the vehicles in Mount Holyoke College's small fleet for departmental use. Not a requirement.
