Department Summary & Job Purpose:

The Career Development Center at Mount Holyoke College helps students explore interests, create career development plans, and gain practical experience through internships and student employment. We also facilitate connections between students and employers, alumnae, and other professionals to create opportunities to engage and build networks.

The Assistant Director, Student Employment, works closely with other members of the Career Development Center’s Experience & Exploration team to manage the college’s decentralized student employment program. In addition, this position is responsible for supporting the Director in managing office operations & budget.

Due to anticipated transitions to the MHC Student Employment program, this position is a temporary, 1-year position.  New, related opportunities will likely be available at the conclusion of this position.

Core Job Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Coordinate with Human Resources, Student Financial Services, and the Community Based Learning Program in the collaborative administration of the MHC Student Employment Program, including ensuring compliance with state and federal employment law and that of the Federal Work-Study program.
  • Chair the Student Employment Advisory Committee, and collaboratively develop student employment policy recommendations that are affordable, scalable, and best represent MHC goals and values. Liaise with the Student Employment Governance Committee.
  • Collaborate with Offices of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, Risk Management, and Human Resources and the Community Based Learning Program to monitor and reduce legal, financial, health, and safety risks of student employment both on and off-campus.
  • Maintain the online database of student employment opportunities, including (a) liaising between the software vendor, Human Resources and LITS, and (b) monitoring and supporting student and supervisor usage of the system. 
  • In partnership with the Career Development Center’s Manager of Metrics and Assessment, manage data pertaining to student employment and produce annual reports regarding engagement, learning, compliance, and inclusive employment practices. 
  • Provide education and coaching to on-campus supervisors and student workers on the following topics: career development concepts, resolving workplace disputes, maintaining compliance with student employment policies and procedures, and creating and maintaining diverse, inclusive employment practices.
  • Use the Student Employment Program as a platform to provide career-related advising, programming, and publications for current students, including, but not limited to (a) individual advising and group presentations on career-related topics for student employees, and (b) coordination of an annual job fair. 
  • Administer all financial processes for the CDC, including purchasing cards, petty cash, reimbursements, and purchasing, liaise with the Financial Services office, and support the director in managing the budget. Ensure the safe and efficient running of the office and its programs, including liaising with Financial Services, Facilities Management, Conference & Event Services, and Auxiliary Service 


  • A bachelor’s degree, or a comparable level of experience, in a related field
  • Demonstrated commitment to principles of community and diversity, and the ability and desire to effectively and consistently relate to a diverse student population
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, faculty, and staff
  • Ability to translate needs and concepts into programmatic actions
  • Excellent organizational skills, and attention to detail
  • Data management skills, including at least intermediate MS Excel competency and ability to learn new routines or applications.
  • Experience with staff training, supervision, and evaluation
  • Strong program development and project management skills
  • Demonstrated ability to understand, explain and enforce policies and procedures with individuals at a wide range of levels of an organization
  • Ability to handle confidential information in a professional manner.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 2-3 years of career development, student life, or human resources experience in a higher education setting
  • Experience providing individual advising that supports the career, intellectual and developmental needs of undergraduates

  • Visual acuity: The employee is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; viewing a computer terminal; and reading
