Department Summary & Job Purpose:
Head Rowing Coach and Lecturer in Physical Education is a full-time coaching and teaching position at the rank of lecturer. The successful candidate will coach, organize, and administer an intercollegiate varsity rowing program as well as teach lifetime sports and fitness activities in the physical education department.
Core Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Head Rowing Coach
- 1. Develop and implement strategies to successfully recruit, yield, mentor, and retain a diverse group of academically and athletically talented student-athletes.
- 2. Identify, develop, and supervise assistant coach(s) including the head novice coach.
- 3. Organize, manage, and schedule practices, training programs, and contests.
- 4. Develop budget requests and manage budget allocations for the rowing program.
- 5. Manage team travel and meals in consultation with the coordinator of travel and meal logistics.
- 6. Work with the Associate Athletics Director for communications to create contest schedules and properly recognize student-athletes.
- 7. Work with the Associate Athletics Director for facilities to ensure the maintenance of equipment and facilities. Provide oversight of the College’s boathouse and docks including racing shells, oars, and ergs.
- 8. Provide oversight of the MHC Community Rowing Program.
- 9. Manage the Friends of Rowing account and other endowed rowing funds.
- 10. Promote a culture of compliance by working with the Associate Director of Athletics to complete necessary NCAA paperwork, and stay informed of sports and governance body rule changes to minimize violations. In the case of violations or problems, report them immediately for immediate attention.
- 11. Create a team environment that allows all players to grow and develop as students, athletes, leaders, and individuals.
- 12. Foster relationships with team members so student-athletes feel supported in their academic endeavors and their goals on the water.
- 13. Create a dynamic practice environment to meet the individual needs of each student-athlete (technical, strength and conditioning, tactical knowledge) and coach student-athletes to their full potential.
- 14. Engage with donors and potential donors as requested by the Director of Athletics.
- 15. Promote a culture of health, well-being, and safety in all aspects of the varsity sport and physical education programs.
- Lecturer in Physical Education and Athletics
- 1. Imagine and implement innovative and fun physical education courses that appeal to a range of skill sets, interests, and experiences.
- 2. Provide administrative support for the physical education program, including but not limited to class syllabus development, maintaining attendance records, and grading.
- 3. Create an inclusive class environment that allows students to access the curriculum safely and effectively.
- 4. Motivate students to learn a new sport or skills to continue to enjoy the sport or activities in future years.
- 5. To promote Be Well and physical activity as a healthy daily activity for life.
- 6. Help students foster connections to other PE students; to other PE classes; to other activities offered in the Kendall Sports & Dance Complex so they are finding multiple ways to use physical activity to promote individual wellness.
- Other Duties
- 1. Participate on Department and College committees as assigned.
- 2. Serve as a game administrator for approximately 4 to 6 contests per year.
- 3. Other duties as assigned.
The position requires a Master’s degree; demonstrated successful coaching and recruiting experience; the ability to work well with student-athletes; and the ability to function effectively at a competitive liberal arts NCAA Division III college with highly selective academic standards.
Teaching experience is preferred.
All department employees are required to demonstrate exemplary ethical conduct and conformance to NCAA rules and regulations; the duties of the position are to be performed in compliance with all NCAA, Conference, and College rules and regulations; and any rules violations on behalf of themselves or any knowledge of violations within the department are to be reported to the appropriate parties. Annually, each department member must pass the NCAA Division III rules test and complete athletics staff sexual violence prevention training.

Employee speaks with students and other faculty daily by telephone, e-mail, or in person on a daily basis.
- Visual Acuity including color, depth perception and field vision.
Regular early morning, evening, and weekend hours are involved and the ability to travel is required.
