The Mount Holyoke College Physics Department seeks a Visiting Lecturer to begin in Fall 2023, for one year, with the possibility of renewal. We are searching broadly for candidates with a strong commitment to excellence in teaching physics and a passion for engaging a diverse population of undergraduate students.

The instructor will teach the equivalent of 5 courses per year. In a typical year, this would mean 2 lecture sections and 6 lab sections (1 lab = 0.5 course), but these numbers can shift depending on particular needs for the year. The instructor will provide primary oversight for the introductory labs – consulting with faculty and staff about supplies, equipment, and curriculum, and supervising student workers who help with the labs. The instructor would have no other formal expectations (e.g. advising, college service). Upon successful review in the second year, and in consultation with the Provost, this teaching-focused position may be extended.

The Physics Department at Mount Holyoke is small but thriving. The five professors, with support from the physics technician and department coordinator, support coursework and activities for all our students, and we graduate 10-18 majors each year. We pride ourselves on providing opportunities for students to engage with potentially publishable research as early as their first year. Mount Holyoke is an undergraduate liberal arts college for women with 2,200 students and 220 faculty, located about 80 miles west of Boston in the Connecticut River valley, and is a member of the Five College consortium consisting of Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke and Smith Colleges and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

Candidates should have experience teaching at the undergraduate level, and interests in teaching and mentoring students who are broadly diverse with regard to race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, nationality, sexual orientation, and religion. Completion of a PhD in Physics or a related field (e.g. Astronomy, Engineering, or STEM Education) is expected prior to or shortly after the date of hire; strong candidates with a Master’s degree will be considered. Candidates will be required to submit a cover letter, CV, contact information for three references, and three statements concerning (1) teaching philosophy, (2) research interests, and (3) approach to mentoring a diverse student body. While research productivity is NOT an expectation of this job, we are curious to know what expertise you might bring.
