This position is funded for three years, with the possibility of renewal.

Department Summary & Job Purpose:

The Fimbel Maker & Innovation Lab serves the entire campus community to support both academic and personal hands-on projects. The Fimbel Technician will join the technical staff to train students, teach workshops, develop new activities, and keep the space welcoming and well run.

 

Core Job Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Prepare and run workshops (for classes, outreach, and evening events) 
  • Assist students, faculty and staff to find resources and operate equipment 
  • Maintain a safe and cleanworkspace within Fimbel Lab, including maintenance of equipment
  • Train student staff on technical tasks 
  • Develop new workshops
  • Consult on student projects when within expertise 
  • Design and build projects that improve the functionality of the space
  • Assist with social media and publicity 
  • Create a positive and welcoming environment for all users, regardless of background and level of knowledge 

Qualifications: Strong human relations and interpersonal skills to maintain an inclusive and welcoming environment
Ability to work as part of a team, as well as independently
Ability to prioritize work duties with demonstrated effective time management skills
Ability to multi-task and transition quickly between projects to address specific situations, and to manage multiple, concurrent projects
Experience with many of the tools in Fimbel Lab and the willingness to learn new skills (e.g. 3D printers, laser cutters, electronics, wood and metal work, machining)
Ability to handle a physically demanding set of tasks (equipment and tool handling, materials)

Preferred Qualifications: Past experience working in a makerspace environment similar to the Fimbel Maker & Innovation Lab
Past experience teaching, tutoring, or mentoring

License/Certifications:

Physical Demands: Must be able to navigate the lab environment and perform the common physical tasks involved with the tools in the space.

Working Conditions: Fimbel Maker & Innovation Lab is a laboratory environment with some mechanical, electrical, chemical, and auditory hazards.
