Department Summary & Job Purpose:

The Drop-In Fitness Instructor is a part-time professional staff position requiring a non-traditional schedule to meet the needs of the recreation program, including nights, weekends, and some holidays.

Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Recreation and Recreation Coordinator, the Drop-In Fitness Instructor will provide group fitness instruction, monitor and educate patrons on fitness and safety, and maintain a safe and enjoyable atmosphere for class participants.

Core Job Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Teaches scheduled classes, beginning and ending on time; provides adequate warm-up, exercises, stretching, and cool-down
  • Instructs patrons on effective workout methods; explains proper techniques, demonstrates exercises; identifies different muscle groups; and teaches appropriate methods to strengthen specific muscles
  • Prepares appropriate equipment, music, and handouts for each class
  • Assists patrons, answers questions, and maintains a positive exercise experience for members and class participants
  • Keeps management informed of customer and facility needs
  • Ensures that safety standards are met and that department and facility policies are adhered to
  • Performs related duties as required 

Qualifications: 

• The position requires a valid national certification in the respective discipline (ACSM, ACE, or equivalent).
• CPR/AED certification is also required.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Additional specialty certifications.
• CSCS, PES, or other performance certification (preferred)

License/Certifications:

• National certification for personal training, group exercise, or specific discipline
• CPR/AED certification
• CSCS, PES, or other performance certification (preferred)

Compliance Requirements: 

Physical Demands: 

• Light work: Exerting up to 30 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If arm and/ or leg control use requires exertion of forces greater than that for sedentary work, the job is rated as light work.
• Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.
• Those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
• Sufficient speech clarity required includes those that permit the employee to discern verbal instructions and communicate effectively in person and by telephone.
• Employee speaks with students and other faculty by telephone, e-mail, or in person daily.
• Visual Acuity, including color, depth perception, and field vision.

Working Conditions: 

• Non-traditional schedule, including possible evenings and weekends.
