The Mount Holyoke College Department of Art History and Architectural Studies invites applications for a historian/theorist of modern and contemporary architecture and urbanism for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor. This individual will provide critical support to our vibrant, growing Architectural Studies program while also serving the larger Art History track in our department. The contract for this position will start July 1, 2024.
A Ph.D. in architectural history and, ideally, a design background, including familiarity with digital programs and software is required to be completed or anticipated by Fall 2024. The teaching load is four courses per year, comprising a general survey on the built environment, upper-level courses in the candidate’s area of expertise, and, depending on their qualifications, occasional design studios. Our new colleague will benefit from campus resources such as Mount Holyoke’s new digital media lab and Fimbel Maker Space. They will also have the opportunity to participate in design reviews and collaborate with colleagues across the Five College Consortium.
Candidates’ specialties may lie in any aspect of modern and contemporary architectural and urban history, including but not limited to sustainability, landscape, ecology, migration and diaspora. We are especially interested in those whose research and teaching engage discourses of race, ethnicity, class, gender, and/or globalization, postcolonialism, and indigeneity. In addition to an active and exciting research program, applicants should have a demonstrated record of strong teaching at the undergraduate level and experience mentoring students who are broadly diverse with regard to race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, nationality, sexual orientation, and religion.
