Department Summary & Job Purpose:

The Mount Holyoke College Department of Public Safety and Service is a full-service agency that serves the College Community and operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We seek a full-time, non-sworn Community Service Officer to join our team. This position requires weekend work and varied shifts. Core Job Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Safeguard the campus community by foot, bicycle or authorized vehicle, reporting unsafe conditions, maintenance issues, lights out, and other issues affecting community welfare
  • Lock and unlock buildings, rooms, doors, and windows as assigned 
  • Provide walking safety escorts and assist with transports as directed for members of the community
  • Assist members of the community and visitors with campus information, directions, and aid
  • Respond with sworn officers to fire alarms or other similar life safety-related concerns
  • Ensure students have the information and tools they need to maintain a safe and enjoyable living and learning environment.
  • Enforce college parking regulations
  • Engage the community on a daily basis – inclusive of conducting foot patrols – and generally interact with people in a casual, friendly, manner. Assist with department outreach programs.
  • Provide emergency medical treatment at level certified 
  • Understanding of the Clery Act, its reporting obligations, and other requirements 
  • Provide crowd and parking control at events and emergencies. Working with students and event hosts to reduce harm at student-hosted social events. Specifically, the team meets with student hosts prior to, during, and after the completion of events. - 

Qualifications: • High School Diploma or equivalent
• Valid driver’s license and successful credentials in order to operate College vehicles
• Strong customer service, time management, and communication skills
• Ability to take initiative; work independently and with team members within and outside of the department
• Commitment to, experience with and/or ability to work effectively with a broad spectrum of individuals from a variety of diverse backgrounds and identities
• Demonstrated compassion and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusivity
• Demonstrated interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills as well as the exercise of diplomacy and to function efficiently under extreme conditions
• Requires sensitivity to issues of confidentiality
• CORI check with satisfactory results

Preferred Qualifications: • Security, safety, or service experience
• Social work experience
• Current certification in First Responder training (CPR, First Aid, Defibrillator, Epi-Pen, and Narcan Administration). Certifications not yet attained by start date must be attained without delay and with the assistance of the College.
• Demonstrated understanding of anti-bias practices and commitment to social justice values and practices
• Mental health first aid training and or certification
• Experience in an education setting and or experience with a student residential population that is gender inclusive

Compliance Requirements: 

Physical Demands: Extended periods of outdoor work and exposure to conditions including temperatures that may range from below freezing to in excess of 100 degrees. The department requires employees to be physically and mentally able to adjust to working in changing environments and conditions. Emergency service and security work requires entry into hazardous environments, exposure to dangerous persons, animals, and substances; and exposure to infectious diseases. A wide range of personal protective equipment is required to be used and maintained, some of which may be uncomfortable or inconvenient to wear. Adherence to specific safety procedures and other precautions is required.

• Rigorous field work requires above-average physical performance, endurance, and superior conditioning. This includes prolonged standing, walking, or running over uneven ground, recurring bending, climbing, reaching, lifting, and carrying of items weighing in excess of fifty pounds and shared lifting and carrying of heavier items, and similar strenuous activities requiring agility and dexterity. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is paramount to working in an environment in which a large percentage of the community is between the ages of 18-22.
