Department Summary & Job Purpose:

Mount Holyoke’s Equestrian Center, one of the largest in the country, is considered one of the nation’s finest riding facilities. The center features a 59-stall barn, two indoor arenas, outdoor show ring, and a permanent sand dressage arena. 

Our collegiate programming is also remarkable. We have won multiple IHSA and IDA National Championships in hunter seat equitation and dressage and often send individual members of our western team to the IHSA National Championships. Excellence is an integral part of our mission and we regularly host internationally renowned clinicians, in addition to well-attended USEF/USHJA recognized events. Our programs are not only where expert riders come to excel, we also provide the opportunity for students who have never ridden before to fall in love with our sport. We provide a dynamic community in which our students are able to learn and grow.

In order to help us continue to achieve this breadth of success, we seek a well-spoken, high-energy stable manager with exceptional organizational, interpersonal, personnel management, and equine management skills to join our management team. This person will be responsible for the administration of our school and boarder horse program, management of our stable staff, and be an integral part of the management team of the Equestrian Center. This is a Full Time position that will involve some weekends.

Mount Holyoke is an undergraduate liberal arts college for women with 2,200 students and 220 faculty.  Over half the faculty are women; one-fourth are persons of color.  Mount Holyoke College is located about 80 miles west of Boston in the Connecticut River valley, and is a member of the Five College Consortium consisting of Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke, and Smith Colleges and the University of Massachusetts.

Core Job Duties and Responsibilities: 

Management of Stable Staff Includes:

  • Day to day task and personnel management of stable assistant staff
  • Tracking work, vacation, and sick hours for stable staff
  • Offering hands –on assistance when short staffed
  • Organization of staff schedule
  • Hiring new staff when needed
  • Assessing workloads and making recommendations for staffing levels
  • Performance management of stable staff including Performance evaluation of stable staff.
  • Cultivating particular professional interests and professional development of stable staff.

Management of School Horse Program Includes: 

  • Scheduling and assisting with/administering vaccinations
  • Scheduling and overseeing corrective shoeing needs
  • Scheduling and administering worming program
  • Administering routine first aid as well as initial first aid in serious injury/illness situations
  • Managing turn out patterns
  • Assigning horses to class schedules
  • Helping students, when necessary, prepare horses for classes
  • Maintenance of saddlery and equipment for school horses
  • Maintenance of school horse appearance
  • Shipment of schoolhorses in emergencies to a surgical clinic
  • Occasional accompaniment of school horses to competitions 

Management of 15 Horse Boarding Program Includes

  • Acting as the Mount Holyoke College Equestrian Center (MHC EC) contact point for boarders regarding their horse’s care at the stable
  • Management of boarder worming and vaccination programs
  • Facilitating reception and departure of boarders with all appropriate paperwork
  • Actively participating in showing prospective students around the MHC EC and answering questions regarding the stable for them

Stable Manager will be

  • Primary “point person” to keep Director and other members of the Management Team apprised of all important information pertaining to the school horse and boarder programs
  • Responsible for supplying the Director with:  Payroll, Vacation and Workload information
  • Any applicable billing information necessary for boarders
  • Recommendations regarding feed and supplements based upon industry research.
  • An integral member of the Management Team
  • Required to attend management meetings and take an active role in the direction of the MHC EC
  • An assistant in the budget process
  • Support during special events/competitions 

Possible opportunities to:

  • Assist Members of management team with special projects
  • Teach beginner level riding classes (after 1st year)
  • Board horse at Equestrian Center 

Qualifications: 

• 5 years related equine experience
• 1+ years in a position with employees reporting directly to you
• Solid proficiency with Google (G-mail, Docs, Sheets, Drive, Forms) & Microsoft (Excel & Word) Suites
• Exceptional, proven organizational skills
• Ability to pivot based on organizational needs - Flexibility
• Ability to work effectively and positively with a wide variety of people (staff, management, vendors, students, boarders, etc.)

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience in successful competition stable and/or collegiate stable 
• Experience giving riding instruction 

License/Certifications:

• Hoisting License (if candidate does not have at time of hire, candidate will be required to become licensed)

Physical Demands: Physical Demands/ Work Type:

• Must be able to work on your feet for the tenure of the duty day (8 hours), the ability to lift a 55lb hay bale overhead, must be able to squat and lift a fully loaded 10yard wheel barrow and push it up an incline to be dumped.


Working Conditions: 

  • This job requires work in all types of weather to include snow and rain conditions, varying temperature conditions (occasionally in extremes consistent with current New England weather), uneven terrain as well as non-improved surfaces. Known equestrian hazards of working with large animals in differing environments, temperaments, and tight quarters are part of this job. Sometimes moving quickly, while maintaining balance is necessary.
