Department Summary & Job Purpose:

The lab manager is responsible for preparing and teaching our introductory lab sections.  Specifically, they are responsible for the physical setup of all labs, and are required to teach 10 lab sections per year.  In the event we have more than 10 lab sections, faculty covers the extra.  They are also responsible for maintaining equipment and purchasing supplies for the labs. 

This job also requires setting the curriculum for the labs, in consultation with the lecture instructor, maintaining digital spaces such as Moodle, and grading lab reports.  In a typical semester, this person will also train and supervise a few student helpers - exact quantity dependent on workload (e.g. overall enrollment and/or number of sections).

Core Job Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Physically preparing introductory lab setups 
  • Maintaining equipment
  • Ordering supplies 
  • Teaching 10 lab sections of up to 16 students 
  • Defining the curriculum for each lab 
  • Using Moodle
  • Grading Lab Reports 
  • Training and supervising student workers 

Qualifications: Bachelor's in Physics or related field

Preferred Qualifications: Masters or PhD in Physics or related field

Physical Demands: 

  • Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/ or leg control requires exertion of forces greater than that for sedentary work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated as light work.
  • Standing: Particularly for sustained periods of time.
  • Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.
  • Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • Sufficient clarity of speech required includes those, which permit the employee to discern verbal instructions and communicate effectively in person and by telephone.

Working Conditions: The employee is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions (such as in typical office or administrative work).

Employee works in laboratory environments with a wide range of hazardous materials.
