Salary Range:  $61,700 - $63,000

Department Summary & Job Purpose:

Mount Holyoke College’s Library, Information and Technology Services (LITS) Division empowers a diverse and inclusive learning community, equipping every person to engage the world purposefully. Reporting to the Head of Archives and Special Collections (ASC), the Digital Applications Archivist supports the operations and application management related to discovering, accessing, and preserving archival materials and other digital collections at the College. Collaborates closely with other LITS departments and campus partners to select, implement, assess, and manage digital repository systems, services, software, and applications that support the work of ASC and other digital collections at the College. Operations include migration, preservation, stewardship, data transfer, and digital archives systems management.

 

Core Job Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Configures and administers digital archives and other digital content systems, including digital repositories, digital asset management systems, and collection management systems that support access and preservation of ASC and other digital collections at the College. 
  • Develops and enacts technical strategies and workflows for creating, managing, preserving, discovering, and accessing unique MHC digital content and collections, including born-digital materials.
  • Provides user support; helps develop content policy and data modeling; performs customizations; runs scripting for reports and task automation; and performs system updates. 
  • Ensures compliance with professional and technology standards, license and regulatory requirements, and MHC standards, policies, and procedures. 
  • Assists with reference and research services as assigned. 
  • Actively works with colleagues in LITS to create a welcoming, equitable, and user-centered environment in which a diverse population of students, faculty, and staff can thrive. 
  • Serves on LITS, College, and Five College committees as assigned. 
  • Engages in professional development through national and regional professional associations and other service opportunities. 
  • Evening and weekend work, as necessary. In some circumstances, assisting during adverse weather and emergencies may be important to cover essential services and service points.
  • The majority of work is performed on-site. This is not a remote position. 
  • Perform related duties as assigned. 

Qualifications: 

  • MLS or other relevant advanced degree. Three to five years of experience, preferably in an academic or cultural heritage setting.
  • Demonstrated experience implementing, configuring, and maintaining digital repositories, digital collections systems, or content/collection management systems for accessing, publishing, and preserving digital content, including born-digital.
  • Demonstrated experience managing and maintaining metadata, data modeling, creating and administering relational databases, using database query and reporting tools, and the ability to leverage and transform data across formats.
  • Demonstrated experience with standards-based non-MARC metadata schemas such as Qualified Dublin Core, MODS, METS, and EAD. Experience creating, manipulating, and transforming XML using XSL/XSLT or other scripting methods. Interest in learning and implementing linked open data and semantic web standards.
  • Must be comfortable overseeing multiple projects and deadlines at once.
  • Knowledge of current and developing technologies, standards, and best practices in archival systems management, policy, and preservation.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion in daily work and the workplace culture.
  • Ability to build and sustain effective and key relationships with a diverse group of alums, researchers, faculty, students, staff, community, and professional colleagues.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge and experience working with primary source materials about women’s history and higher education in the United States.
  • Exhibits excellent and creative interpersonal communication, organizational and problem-solving skills, and strong oral and written communication skills.
  • An enthusiastic, people-oriented individual with creativity and a passion for supporting a collaborative work environment.
  • Ability to maintain a professional and tactful approach in all interactions, ensuring confidentiality and an individual’s right to privacy regarding appropriate information.

Physical Demands: 

  • Communicates regularly with people in person and remotely.
  • Must be able to observe and assess content on computer screens and printed materials.
  • Moves boxes up to 40 lbs on a regular basis.

  • The employee is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions (such as in typical office or administrative work).
